About Marcela Shine

Marcela Shine became a Superhero on November 17, 2009 when her son was born, and started blogging about the transformation about 6 months later. She believes that all parents are “Just Like Superheroes”, and that they each have their own very special super power.

Marcela’s super power seems to be juggling. Proud mom first and foremost, full-time career, full-time wife, full-time daughter and sister and more. Marcela spends her days as CEO of Brightgeist Media Brightgeist Media, an online platform that monetizes websites for attorneys, chiropractors and other service professionals interested in growing their businesses online. Evenings, weekends and any other non-existent hours in between are spent juggling everything else. In that spare time, Marcela works on various volunteer projects including:

PromisingGrowth.com aims to provide self-sustainability to a small village near Medellin, Colombia through the purchases and import of the villager’s handmade handbags. Last year the project provided over 20 families with living expenses. Once current inventory is sold, the goal is to buy more and to support more families.

ShineOn! Marketing helps women-owned and minority-owned businesses with their online marketing. The goal is to teach that with the right tools, using online media to grow businesses can be inexpensive and very simple.

Why DO Mommies Blog?

I was recently interviewed on BlogTalkRadio by the SassyLadies about how I’ve integrated my corporate role with mommy blogging.  They were primarily interested in understanding the business models that mom bloggers might use to monetize their blogs.  But the question I enjoyed most, even though we only spent two seconds on it before we got into the business models was (from the transcript):

Wendy: “Why are women so interested in mommy blogging, women that are home with kids? What are some of the business models?… there are some women that want to look at this from two prongs. They want to be able to do that exchange information, get ideas, ask questions, but then there are those that want to see if they can make this a business even if it’s something very small. What are the opportunities there for women?”

Marcela:” To answer why women do this and why do they jump into blogging if they’re home busy with their kids, I think when we get pregnant, we have to do all of this research. We have to figure out which stroller to buy and we start accumulating all of this information. Your friends know that you really got into stroller shopping, a monitor or whatever it was until you feel like you want to share that with other moms because you’re learning. I think that plants a bug.”

So, first – correction.  we know mommy bloggers aren’t just stay at home moms.  I wouldn’t be writing otherwise!  The point is, that stay at home or not, moms are the busiest souls on earth, and yet we find time for blogging.  Are we all nuts or what?!  So I ask you… what started you down this path?  What planted that bug for you? I Wish You Wrinkles – A Perspective on Aging

I won’t even try to hide it. I turned 36 today and I love birthdays. All birthdays, everyone’s birthdays, all the attention from birthdays. I think birthdays should be celebrated for at least a week. Heck, call it your own national holiday and take the day off if you can! Cards, calls, text messages, Facebook messages from people you don’t really know! Bring it on! Not everyone shares my point of view of course.

Many people, particularly my girlfriends, really hate their birthdays. I know, I know… we look older, have yet another gray hair to color, another wrinkle to battle, another hair growing where it doesn’t belong. We think about all the things we swore we’d do before our next birthday that didn’t get done. But that’s the entire point isn’t it? The gift of birthdays are the gift of life.

It’s not realistic to always be that positive about things. Some days, including some birthdays, are harder than others. Some years are just bad ones. Our son just lost his paternal grandfather to cancer less than two weeks ago. Grandpa was young, he died five days before his 61st birthday. Grandpa’s goodbye was the most honorable event I’ve ever attended. [Read more...]
