My 7-year old wants a “Real” job

My 7-year old wants a job.  Well, let me rephrase that.  My 7-year old needs a job because he wants an iPod Touch and a flat screen TV for his room for Christmas….neither of which this Santa plans on putting under the tree.

My husband and I sat him down and made him a deal.  If he saved his money, he could buy whichever expensive toys that he wants no matter how we really feel about them.  His money, his choice.

While we don’t disperse a weekly allowance, he does receive a few dollars here and there throughout the month:  helping with yard work, getting a good test grade, etc.  We told him that if he made a goal to save up those dollars instead of blowing them on small indulgences like Slurpee’s at 7-11, that before he knows it, he’ll have plenty saved for his big purchase. Mommy’s “Summer Fun” List

Before summer officially begins, I sit down with my children and allow them to make a list of “50 Fun Things to-do” throughout the summer.  While some of the “things” are costly (day trips to Great Adventure, the Cape May Zoo, etc.) an equal amount of silly things we can do in the comfort of our own home—or closely nearby—when their “boredom” sets in.

But, what about us moms?  Sure, the summer is filled with shuffling our kids back and forth to parks, playdates and the beach, but what about some things just for us so that we can enjoy the warmth and freedom that the summer brings?  This year, I’ve made my first “Mommy’s Summer Fun List” and I am sharing it with you to hopefully inspire you to take some time to do the same.

In no particular order, here are 15 (yeah, I know—they get 50, and I get just 15!) things I’d really like to do this summer:

  1. Read a good book, or two!  After a long day playing cruise director, all I care to read is something light-hearted and easy, which is why I picked up “Didn’t I Feed You Yesterday” after a recommendation from a fellow blogger.
  2. Lay on my hammock—as opposed to glancing at it wishing I were laying on it.
  3. Declare a few minutes each day as “adult swim” time where the kiddies get to play happily in their yard while mommy floats around the pool.  Cocktail optional.
  4. Organize my filing cabinet once and for all.
  5. Hire a babysitter at least once this summer so I can lay on the beach…alone.  [Read more...]

What's in a name?

One of the most memorable parts of pregnancy is choosing your unborn child’s name.  When I was expecting my first child, I bought three books filled with baby names.  Looking back, I have to wonder why I needed a book {or three for that matter!} especially because we ended up going a very traditional route.

Even so, we put a great deal of thought into his name because my husband is a “junior” and we weren’t certain we wanted our son to be a “third.”  After hours of mulling over our options, we decided to take my husband’s first name—Donald—and combine it with my father’s name—James—and name him “Donald James,” but call him “D.J.” for short.

We intended on calling him “D.J.” from the start, not “Donald,” or “Don,” or {eek!} “Donnie.”  {No offense to you “Donnies” out there, I just don’t plan on raising the newest N.K.O.T.B. member.}   What I did not intend on calling him was “Deej”—as if “D.J.” even warrants the convenience of a nickname!
