About a year ago, I finally came around to the genius of massage as a therapeutic tool, not just pampering. I even credit much of my weight loss to regular massages. I also learned that you can find great practitioners anywhere. You don’t have to break the bank at some fancy high-end spa to get really good services.
Which brings me to today’s post. You’ve likely passed a Massage Envy on your way to a grocery store or any other strip-mall location. I walked past one at least once a week, before I finally walked in only to discover a high-end spa experience for a whole lot less money. I’m now a regular massage customer at a Massage Envy, so when I was asked to try out their facial services, you would think I would jump at the chance. Truth? I didn’t. I was skeptical about letting someone mess with my face for all the same reasons I used to be worried about getting a massage in a strip mall. Would it be quality care? Would they just try to sell me all the products? Would I come out looking like I’d rubbed sand all over my skin?
Here is the thing. I’m getting old and finally seeing it in my face. For years I sold skin care and did makeup for people and never truly understood what may happen to your skin if you don’t take good care of it because I was young and fresh-faced. So, all my clients that complained about crows feet and dark patches and fine lines never really had an impact on me. I thought I was just genetically blessed, so for years I didn’t practice what I preached. What I was instead was a young and foolish girl who needed to moisturize more.
I have seen first hand the power of facials in women I have worked with who still glow in their senior years. I know getting one would have positive effects on my rapidly aging skin, but I was afraid that I couldn’t afford a facial or if I found one I could afford, it wouldn’t be effective. Finally, I decided to try out Massage Envy. If I found affordable yet effective massages there, why not a facial too?
I went into the Holmdel Massage Envy with an open mind but also the feeling that I would be a one and done facial client. I came out booking my next appointment. My esthetician Crystal was everything I would hope for in a skin care professional. She was careful and gentle. She educated me on every step but managed to do it in a way that didn’t feel like a sales pitch. Not only did the session feel wonderful, I could tell by the nearly total transformation of my skin afterward that she was also doing a lot of work on that table!
The final kicker for me came at the end of our session when Crystal only recommended one product and I had to ask her to identify more for me to buy. My only other experience with facials is leaving with a laundry list of never-heard-of before products (and I’m a skin care and makeup junkie so this is hard to do) that I MUST have in order to maintain the magic of the facial. Not the case at Massage Envy. First, they use Murad products, so I already trusted the brand. Second, while I would likely look amazing if I used everything Crystal used on a daily basis, she only recommended the day cream because I told her I needed one with an SPF. Crystal actually said that regular facials are great but there is no need to use every step every day in order to maintain healthy skin. So, I could go back to my mish-mash of beauty product favorites and still look as good as she made me look that day.
I am so glad I wandered into that Massage Envy for a massage all those months ago. I am extra glad that I met Crystal at the Massage Envy in Holmdel. My face and the less-visible wrinkles, owe her big! I’d suggest you go visit as well. There is magic in those strip malls. I promise.
