We may be smiling, but we’re angry.
Anger is usually something I try to avoid as I am of the firm belief that anger can rot your soul. I don’t want to get angry with my kids because no one learns or grows if I am angry. I don’t want be angry at people who aren’t nice because I don’t heal and they don’t change, if I am only angry. Angry isn’t something that works for me.
A few weeks ago, a group of moms decided to train for and complete the Avon 39 walk together. We’re all very different. One’s a runner. A couple are hikers. One’s a triathlete. One can do anything physical you ask at any given time. Some of us aren’t quite sure what we are. We used to be athletes, but now we’re just moms, who sometimes work out and often sit in front of a computer wishing we were working out. But somehow, in all our shapes and forms, we decided to come together, this motley crew, and walk for 39 miles in the name of fighting breast cancer. I have been trying to figure out why for a while and I think maybe I’ve figured it out.
We’re all angry.
Oh, you’d never know it to look at us. There are plenty of smiles and laughs and optimistic points of view in our crew of walkers. But underneath, I think, just maybe, we’re pissed off at Cancer.
We’re mad that our sisters are fighting for their lives just when they’re supposed to be in their prime. We’re angry that our mothers and aunts have to go through devastatingly brutal chemo when instead they should be enjoying retirement in the sand somewhere. We’re pissed that our neighbors are taken from us just when we’ve cemented them into our hearts as friends. And we’re sick and tired of explaining to our kids where their beloved teacher’s gone, or why their friend’s mom wears a wig or why they’re the only one in their class without a grandma.
Sure, we laugh together and we recognize every day how blessed our lives are, so we smile a lot and love hard and feel good, a lot of the time because we have a responsibility, as the healthy ones to live out loud and be grateful for it. But simmering underneath all the positivity we, all of us, the athletes, the hikers, the bikers, the moms, we are angry, really, really angry and it’s time we do something with it.
So, we’ll walk. We’ll fundraise and train and plan and scheme how to fit it all in. And all the while we’ll shout from the rooftops about awareness and cures. For our mothers and sisters and cousins and neighbors and friends deserve nothing less than us using our anger to make a change.
Cancer has pissed this group off enough to hit the streets and do our part to change the future. Sometimes, anger works.
