- You have a lot of birthdays come up all at once. (The month of May is worse than Christmastime in our house.)
- Trying to buy for the person who has everything and/or won’t give you any idea what they want. (I’m sorry, but even if it is just a gift card to somewhere specific, everyone wants something for their birthday. Yes you do, Mom…yes you do…stop it…)
- Trying to decide which gifts are from whom. (OK, this one might just be us, but for close family and friends, we have our gifts separated as from my husband & I or from our daughter. Yeah, I like making things more difficult than they need to be…)
We do something that my mom did for my grandfather, so I guess you can call it a tradition or family (not-so) secret. When we buy presents, the one that comes from our daughter is called a “necessity bag”. I find out what type of shampoo, conditioner, coffee, deodorant, lotions, etc. that the person uses and I purchase that stuff and put it in a gift bag. Done! Stop laughing at me and think about it. If someone handed you a bag full of stuff that you use every day, and saved you a trip to the store to get it, what better present is there? Not only have we saved you money on the items, but also money on the gas to get to the store, saved you time out of your day…this idea could legitimately result in world peace if more people did it (sarcasm).
Let me tell you the response we have gotten from people when they get this present has been gratitude. It usually involves something to the tune of, “There’s things I can cross off my Target list!” or “I needed this right now!” as they rip into the ChapStick or lotion included in the bag. The reaction on my end…pure satisfaction for a gift well done.
Now I’m not saying you should do this every time (but if this makes some times a little easier for you, you’re welcome). It is of course nice to get the personal gift, but if you are going nuts trying to think of what to get someone, this is an easy idea.
