Any time someone is going to become a parent, they always have a plan on the kind of parent they will be. “I’m going to do (this)” and “I’m not going to do (this)”. I’ve actually had this discussion recently and realized my list has become longer than I thought, especially as my daughter gets older.
Here’s my Top 3 and how they went totally down the drain…obviously through varying ages.
Enjoy the laughs!
1. I’m going to have an all-natural birth. No meds.
Ha! That one makes me laugh to this day. What was I thinking? Well, my mom had all natural births with my brother and I and I wanted to try to be SuperMom like her. Yeah…not so much… I did make it a few hours into labor, but then the doctor came in at the point of no return asking me if I was sure I didn’t want an epidural. I gave in. My exact words were, “Just do it before I change my mind!” 10 minutes later I was hooked up. Ahhhh sweet relief! I got a few good hours of rest before my daughter had to be born via c-section after 18 hours of labor. (That’s a whole other post subject.) Honestly one of the best changed-my-mind moments.
2. I’m not going to yell.
“Can you pick up those toys please?”
5 minutes later…”You need to pick up your toys before we leave.”
5 minutes later…”I asked you to pick up your toys.”
5 minutes later…”PICK UP YOUR TOYS!!!!”
I believe this one goes against anything that has been written about in all those “parenting” books by the “experts”, but if there are any parents out there who have never yelled at their kids at some point, please loan me your magic wand. Thanks!
3. I’m not going to sit my kid in front of the TV.
“What? Oh…you woke Mommy up pre-coffee? Yes, I know the sun is still sleeping. Yes, sweetie, here’s your milk and cereal and oh! Look! Doc McStuffins is on! Mommy is going to sit back down for a minute.”
Think about it. You know you have a list. Be it 3 or 30 things, we all have some things that aren’t what we thought they would be like. It just proves that parenting isn’t cookie cutter.
Mmmmm….now I want to go burn…I mean make some cookies.
