It’s that time of year again! You can’t go anywhere during the month of January without seeing something about how to lose weight and get fit. New Year, new you! People magazine’s current cover is the annual “Half Their Size!” edition. The new season of The Biggest Loser is premiering this week. Every store is offering discounts on fitness and nutrition products. But what about keeping the weight off? The magazines and televisions programs never really say much about that, do they?
I have a bit of experience in this area. Over 12 years ago, I began my weight-loss journey. By changing my eating habits and beginning a regular exercise regimen, I lost 128 pounds in about 20 months. No surgery, no drugs, just eating right and moving. I, like many others, am proof that eating right and exercising can help you lose weight. So, how have the last 10 years been for me?
Six and a half years ago I gave birth to my first son, B. He was not the best napper, so every day I took him for a 5 mile walk around our neighborhood. The daily walks and breastfeeding helped to get me close to my pre-baby weight. Then one day when B was about nine months old, my local mom’s club hosted a demo stroller class at the park. The class, run by Mommy-Moves, was a combination of strength training and cardio. I really enjoyed the class, and I liked that I could keep B with me. I immediately signed up for the class and started to go twice per week. Classes were held outside during the summer and fall, and indoors during the winter. When I became pregnant with my second child, I continued with the stroller class until my 38th week. I was amazed at how much better I felt during my second pregnancy. Once I received clearance from the doctor six weeks post partum, I resumed the stroller class and kept taking it regularly until my youngest son N no longer needed a stroller. The certified instructors, moms themselves, know how to tailor the program to fit everyone, whether you are pregnant, post partum, a beginner or ready for more advanced work. They also offer a mommy-only boot camp class, which is amazing (and on the beach during the summer!).
The following year, I decided to join the Mommy-Moves run program (now called “Run With The Girls”). The program, which is also geared towards every level of fitness, trains participants for 12 weeks to run a 5k. When I started, I could only run for one minute, but I continued with the program. At the end of 12 weeks, I finished the 5k, running the entire race.
Now, almost six years after I joined Mommy-Moves, I have completed 6 triathlons, 1 half marathon, 3 very hilly 15k races and several 10k, 5 mile and 5k races. I have maintained my weight loss, and become much stronger. I’ve also changed my eating habits. I follow a ‘clean’ eating program, which means I do not eat processed foods or artificial sugars, nor do I drink soda.
Is this easy? I will not lie to you. It is not. There’s a reason I call it a journey- it is a path I will need to be on for the rest of my life. I have to make sure I schedule in my workouts to keep them a priority. If I get off track with my eating, I have to remember to not beat myself up and just get back on program. But being a fit mom is the best feeling. I can keep up with my energetic children. I have a stronger core, so I can pick them up without hurting my back. I do not suffer from minor health issues, like stomach aches, because I eat clean.
One of the reasons I enter triathlons and races is to help keep me focused. And I have amazing support from the Mommy-Moves coaches. For me, the best part about the Mommy-Moves program is that they have evolved with me. I’ve been a new mom who wanted to lose the baby weight, a pregnant mom, a post partum mom, a mom who wanted to increase strength and endurance, and now a mom who hopes someday to run a marathon and complete an olympic distance triathlon. And I’ve been able to work out with my kids in tow when they were babies and I needed them to be with me. It’s all possible for me. It’s possible for everyone.
