This morning my 8 year-old Autistic son was killing time before school. He was twenty minutes deep into his own little world which, on this given day, included dozens of plastic animal figurines. I approached him and did what all the experts say I should do. I used his fascination with the toys to connect with him and teach a short lesson.
“Eric, where do fish live?”
“In the ocean,” he replied showing slight annoyance with my intrusion into his fantasy world.
“Right! Where do monkeys live?” I asked, grabbing a little monkey figurine and making it do back flips.
“In the jungle!”
“Awesome, buddy! Where do sheep live?” I pointed to a flock of six plastic figurines he had meticulously lined up on his toy table.
He didn’t miss a beat.
“With Bo Peep!”
Now let me ask you, my friends… who is teaching whom?
