I have about six minutes of battery power on a portable wi-fi and this is where I wanted to be. I have work to do of course, and two personal blogs that I maintain, but here, at Jersey Moms Blog is where I found my fingers taking me when I laid them on the keyboard.
It’s been two days since the full-force of Sandy hit our shores and the devastation is heartbreaking. The beaches we love, the towns we’ve come to count on for fun and frolic, not to mention work and home, are gone. There are astronomical power outages and more roads closed with fallen trees than anyone thought imaginable. And then the fires and floods that keep roaring away? Well, it’s all enough to break the strongest person.
But it hasn’t, and it won’t. Jersey can’t be broken. The Governor is roaring away about caring nothing about politics, only his people. Emergency responders are out in force, risking life and limb in some cases, to keep Jersey safe. And the neighbors? The neighbors are what makes Jersey, well, Jersey.
They are walking to survey the land together. They are breaking bread together over camping stoves. They are helping move water from basements and trees off of cars. They are lending beds to those who have none. There are generators running to keep whole streets worth of food safe. There are many hands moving limbs and stumps from yards that are not their own. There is companionship and camaraderie and sometimes even laughter.
Nope, Jersey can’t be broken. No matter how much physical damage Hurricane Sandy brought down upon us, the people of New Jersey will seek shelter in one another. Because together we find our strength. Together, we are Jersey strong.
