When raising kids, there are a lot of “firsts”. First tooth. First word. First step. We don’t always stop to recognize some of the other firsts that occur in our kid’s lives. There is the first friend, the first trip to the movies, first soccer game, first dance recital. What about that first concert?
There is something about being able to see your favorite band play live. I find it to be an almost magical experience; the music enters you, stays with you, in a way it doesn’t when listening to your iPod. Everyone remembers the first concert they attended. Mine was New Kids on the Block. I was in seventh grade and my best friend’s parents were
silly nice enough to take us girls to the Meadowlands to see them. We were decked out in our NKOTB t-shirts, declaring our love for our favorite band member (mine was Jordan, hers was Joey) and ready to sing our hearts out along to every song. Facing a stadium full of screaming pre-teen and teenage girls is a pretty brave thing for a parent to do in my opinion. I loved them for it.
My son has heard me talk about my concert experiences and has wanted to attend a concert. So, recently when my husband and I were purchasing tickets to see one of our favorite bands we decided to invite our son along. I watched his excitement build as the date grew closer. At the concert, I watched my son as he picked out his first concert t-shirt, as he looked around the stadium in awe, and as the music washed over him and he soaked it in as the magic took over. I’m so glad I was with him for this first.
So how did my son sum up his experience of his first concert? To quote him: “AWESOME!” And one day, I hope he looks back on this and thinks of me as an awesome mom for giving him this experience.
