We’ve all heard about MILFs and the passion they inspire in so many men. Having just cruised through Father’s Day weekend, it seems like a perfect time to celebrate the DILFs and their equally sizzling hotness.
As a woman of a certain age, who also happens to be an entertainment junkie, I’m finding it increasingly squirmish to gaze longingly on sculpted young men who are, literally, young enough to be my sons. And when thinking like that pops into your mind, well, there goes the nice little flutter of excitement right along with it … no matter how unbearably gorgeous Ryan Gosling may be. Hey, girl – how about a backrub from someone you might have served juice boxes to during a playdate just a few years ago? Eww.
So, in honor of all the delectable dads out there who make over-40 look so damn good, I present a five-day program-at-home DVD festival featuring just a select few of Hollywood’s most perfect specimens of real-life dads who are doing the world a great service by reproducing.
Day 1: Clive Owen / Inside Man (Heist Thriller)
Kick off the fest with an excellent thriller that’s pretty chockablock with hotness, co-starring DILFs Denzel Washington and Willem Dafoe and uber-MILF Jodie Foster. This is a wonderfully tense and twisty heist caper expertly directed by Spike Lee. The plot centers around mastermind Clive Owen and you won’t want to take your eyes off him.
Day 2: Robert Downey Jr / Iron Man (Action Adventure)
If you’ve seen the recent Avengers blockbuster, you got a taste of Robert Downey Jr’s acerbic wit and oddly charming facial hair (not to mention his impressive toned bod). To get a full serving of the character’s hilarious patter and multiple close-ups of his mesmerizingly dark eyes, check out the first Iron Man movie. Far superior to the tedious sequel, it features bonus-DILF Jeff Bridges and a lot of good action and crafty humor.
Day 3: Javier Bardem / Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Romance)
Not the best Woody Allen movie, but a worthy vehicle for Javier Bardem’s particular brand of yum. Gorgeously filmed, it will make you want to get on a plane to Spain. Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz add to the visual bounty here, but it’s Javier who sets the thing ablaze.
Day 4: Jason Isaacs / Case Histories (Crime Drama)
Jason Isaacs, where have you been all my (adult) life? If you didn’t watch the recently cancelled NBC show “Awake,” you missed a very interesting concept and a truly outstanding performance. Catch it on demand or online, if it’s not too late. Isaacs, who also played the devilishly sexy Death Eater Lucius Malfoy, needs much more screen time on this side of the pond. Case Histories is a PBS miniseries now on DVD that features a richly woven murder mystery set in Scotland. Yes, that means Isaacs, in addition to being rough-around-the-edges gorgeous, also sports a Scottish burr. Uh huh.
Day 5: Johnny Depp / Pirates of the Caribbean (Comedy)
Well, you didn’t think you were going to get through this list without seeing old JD’s name on here, did you? Though I am endlessly devoted to my Johnny, I do find it frustrating that so many of his roles leave his unadorned beauty buried under layers of foolishness and wigs. The first Pirates movie is a partial exception – the dreadlocks and eyeliner are fanciful but they don’t truly obscure him. The full force of his performance comes through despite the plumage and, unlike all the sequels, this one is truly fun and funny. Plus you get Orlando Bloom, who is just a few short years away from qualifying as a DILF himself.
Sorry, Marky Mark and Matt Damon. Maybe you’ll make the cut next year. And Brad? Alas, the Angelina factor cancels you out. (Though you were really good in Moneyball. Kisses!) Leave a comment and let me know who your fave famous dad is, and what movie to watch him in.
