I was recently interviewed on BlogTalkRadio by the SassyLadies about how I’ve integrated my corporate role with mommy blogging. They were primarily interested in understanding the business models that mom bloggers might use to monetize their blogs. But the question I enjoyed most, even though we only spent two seconds on it before we got into the business models was (from the transcript):
Wendy: “Why are women so interested in mommy blogging, women that are home with kids? What are some of the business models?… there are some women that want to look at this from two prongs. They want to be able to do that exchange information, get ideas, ask questions, but then there are those that want to see if they can make this a business even if it’s something very small. What are the opportunities there for women?”
Marcela:” To answer why women do this and why do they jump into blogging if they’re home busy with their kids, I think when we get pregnant, we have to do all of this research. We have to figure out which stroller to buy and we start accumulating all of this information. Your friends know that you really got into stroller shopping, a monitor or whatever it was until you feel like you want to share that with other moms because you’re learning. I think that plants a bug.”
So, first – correction. we know mommy bloggers aren’t just stay at home moms. I wouldn’t be writing otherwise! The point is, that stay at home or not, moms are the busiest souls on earth, and yet we find time for blogging. Are we all nuts or what?! So I ask you… what started you down this path? What planted that bug for you?
For me it was almost a right of passage. We were told my multiple doctors for over two years that we weren’t going to be able to have a baby. So after our little miracle came along (thanks to an amazing team of IVF doctors), I knew I was going to do anything and everything that had the word “mom” attached to it! I couldn’t wait to talk to others that were going through similar experiences. I started blogging out of frustration, and then realized that moms had so many points of view, that I started to blog about other topics. The more I read other blogs, the more passionate I became about blogging.
The other thing that I have found amazing is the power behind the words “mommy blogger.” By pulling our voices together through technology, we are a force to be reckoned with. Brands love us and fear us! What I’ve loved the most about this so far is that moms are all united by this passion. No strange competitive vibes, no cattiness. I wasn’t used to that because back in my corporate days, I found that women were sometimes more difficult to deal with than men, more competitive with each other. Here, it’s like-minded mommies (and daddies) blog hopping, throwing twitter parties and reading each other’s blogs. We try to help newbies increase their following and continue to fuel the bigger sites into monstrous powerhouses! This allows us to network, grow and explore all while our baby monitors assure us that the kids are safely asleep next door. All in all, I’m so glad I got the bug!
